Photographs have always been done of dolls. These photographs have ran the gambit from dark and morose to serene and innocent. Yet in today’s open society, a space has opened up for photographs done of Japanese sex dolls? Art has always been a place where nudity and profanity are usually accepted, so why shouldn’t there be a place for female sex dolls today? Especially when people are more open to such things than they have ever been.
One photographer, by the name of Laurie Simmons, has always taken pictures of dolls, and has recently turned towards Japanese sex dolls for her artist needs and purposes. Simmons is quoted as saying, “By using dolls, inanimate objects, I can get more quickly to the core of emotions than when using other people.”
The aforementioned quote by Laurie Simmons gets straight to the core of why people have begun turning to realistic female sex dolls for artistic purposes. When photographers work with dolls, things are simpler, and cheaper. Japanese sex dolls are the most realistic dolls out there, resembling real women almost exactly. It is only natural that when a realistic doll is needed for photos, that one of these dolls would then be used. Let’s delve just a little deeper into this.
The largest reason people have for using female sex dolls in their photography is the simplicity. The artist can move the doll whichever way they want, and the doll will stay there. Dolls can also be used in situations where it might not be safe to use a normal woman. Extreme heights and dangerous animals are just two dangerous situations that come to mind. It could also be that the photographer simply does not enjoy working with models, who can be demanding and cost extreme amounts of money.
This leads us to the second reason why Japanese sex dolls may be an easier route: the cost. Even if you were to get a high range doll, you would end up saving money in the long run. Let’s say that the model you would normally use costs you £40 an hour (and that’s a very cheap price for a model), and each photo shoot lasts around 2 hours. That’s £80 a shoot, right? Not exactly…take into consideration the food you will undoubtedly supply (even if only water), and the costs of make up and wardrobe. At it’s cheapest, you’ve just doubled what you thought you would spend. £160 a shoot. One shoot a week. You would pay your doll off in 31 weeks, and after that, it would basically be free labor- in a manner of speaking, of course. If you are a professional and intend on doing this for a long period of time, it’s obvious that the female sex doll will pay itself off in the long run.
So are Japanese sex dolls a modern art form? I would have to say that they are. Not only that, but one that seems to be the better choice where photography is concerned.
